Grateful Grandparents Pay It Forward by Supporting Goshen Health Foundation

Pat and Vince Turner

The compassionately delivered emergency care that their grandchild received two decades ago is what inspired Pat and Vince Turner to support Goshen Health today. Their planned gift will benefit patients for years to come.

Pat and I have made our home in Goshen for 30 years, embracing the unique combination of history and entrepreneurship that has become a community brand. We relax in the comfort of traditional values, and at the same time, we are energized by a willingness to embrace new and different opportunities.

We have found Goshen Hospital to be a stellar example of this blend. We have played every role from patient to visitor. Emergency room visits. A stay in intensive care. Imaging. Diagnostics. There is a common thread running through these services: personal care.

Our most memorable experience came 20 years ago when our first grandchild was with us for a weekend visit. The thrill of the moment turned frightening when she somehow swallowed a coin, and it became lodged in her throat. Panic struck as she began gasping for air. We quickly made our way to the emergency room.

The care we received was astounding. And it is important to emphasize the word care over treatment because it is exactly what we experienced immediately upon arrival. We appreciate the skill of all involved, of course, but we were especially struck by the empathy shared by everyone we met.

Our fright eventually became relief. It truly was a higher level of care.

This is the essence of our decision to participate in the future of Goshen Hospital through a planned gift. There will be other panicked grandparents who rush in with a little one who has swallowed a coin, crashed a bike, or tumbled down a flight of stairs. We hope they experience the same relief a caring staff extended to us.

As Vince points out, there’s a difference between care and treatment. Supporting Goshen Health Foundation means that compassionate care, which patients experience no matter what service they receive, is strengthened now and secured for the future.
